Keep your head tilted backwards

Note: This is the last call for suggestions and ideas on how to take advantage of the Christmas season to share the good news of Jesus Christ with family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and the community. The list is being compiled, edited and later this week will be emailed to all Bible Bite recipients. If you haven’t submitted your suggestions yet, or if you have already but would like to add something else, do it today. If you don’t have time to write it up in your usual fashion, just send it as a cryptic one liner and forget about intro’s, proper grammar, tidy paragraphs and a formal closing. PDR

Have you ever been to an air show? Thousands of people milling about with children perched on their shoulders. If you were driving by the crowd with your windows rolled up, you might wonder what the big attraction was. Rarely does anyone look down and notice an earwig or a spider or an ant. Everybody is looking up. Everyone’s neck muscles are being strained; heads are tilted backwards – all eyes are glued to the skies. Even the camera’s have the upward tilt. The big attraction seems to be above – not below. People tend to only look up when they think something is happening or about to happen up there – a flash of lightning; an eclipse; a passing comet; a fireworks display…..or an air show.

The Apostle Paul wrote to the Christians in Colosse about the Deity and absolute superiority and supremacy of Christ. He was ‘nipping in the bud’ false doctrine that was looking for a foothold in the local church there. He reminds them that they belong to the Body of Christ but their Head is in Heaven. Members of the body down here – but the Head of the Body is up there. The Head is the Resurrected and Ascended Christ! He’s up there! Paul writes:

“If ye then be risen with Christ,

seek those things which are

ABOVE

where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

Set your affection on things

 ABOVE,

not on things on the earth.

For ye are dead and your life is hid with Christ in God.

When Christ who is our life

Shall appear,

Then shall ye also appear with Him in glory.”

Colossians 3:1-4

Which way is your head tilted?  Pulled forward and down or bent backwards and up? Are you looking at passing earwigs and spiders or are you watching for the air show?  Are my primary interests located in Heaven or am I preoccupied with the interests of earth? What claims the affections of my heart? Are my heart strings being strummed from above or is the world making the music in my heart? The great ideas that captivate my mind from morning until sunset – are they related to what’s ABOVE or can they be classified as ‘things on the earth.’ Are my goals and aspirations horizontal on the flat or vertical on the Above?

If someone was driving by your life with their windows rolled up – would they get the sense that you must see something up there that they are missing? Perhaps they will ask you about what’s going on ABOVE that seems to be of such interest to you. Then you will be able to tell them about your Saviour and Lord – the Living Christ. Be sure to mention that this One who is your life and for whom you are living, will appear in the future and your life is with Him forever in Glory. That’s why the temporal things (like careers and money) are for you only secondary. They are merely a means to your end – which is eternal glory.

Keep your head tilted backwards today. Make sure the compass of your heart is pointing to Heaven’s North. That’s where Christ is. ABOVE! The greatest of all Air Shows could happen today!

Be sure to enjoy the Lord today.

 Warmly in Christ,

Peter Ramsay
